Preview: United Women v Hammarby

Manchester United Women are in UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying action again on Saturday, as we face Hammarby.

Marc Skinner’s side were victorious against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday in Stockholm, as we beat the Dutch outfit 4-0, thanks in large to an impressive hat-trick from Elisabeth Terland.

That win ensured our passage into this weekend’s ’Group 1’ second-qualifying round final fixture, in which we will now meet Hammarby.

Another success would leave the Reds potentially one game away from qualifying for this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage, for the first time.

HOW TO WATCH

The tie is set to kick off at 18:00 BST (19:00 local time in Sweden) and will be shown live, and in full, on MUTV, although the encounter is only available for those in the UK, Ireland and the US.

Zarah Connolly will be on the ground in Scandinavia, while  radio commentary from our expert panel of Liam Bradford and Ben Thornley will also keep you right up to date on both ManUtd.com and in the Official App.

Post-game thoughts, and short match highlights, will be delivered following the full-time whistle in Stockholm.

TEAM NEWS

Reds boss Skinner was without a number of players for Wednesday clash with PSV, as Leah Galton, Rachel Williams and summer signing Fridolina Rolfo all missed out.

Marc is set to hold a pre-match press conference in Sweden on Friday, where we expect him to provide an update on who is available for the game. 

Lisa Naalsund was deployed in a more advanced role in midweek, and it remains to be seen whether Skinner opts to select Naalsund as a strike partner to Terland again on Saturday.

OPPOSITION WATCH

Hammarby finished third in the women’s Allsvenskan last season – and thus earned a spot in the second qualifying round of the 2025/26 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

They have already seen off Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv, winning 5-4 in an enthralling encounter, just hours after the Reds had beaten PSV with relative comfort.

Over 3,000 fans packed into the 3Arena to support the local outfit, who play their home games at that stadium domestically.

Former Manchester City striker Julie Blakstad is one to watch, having scored 25 times since her move from England back in 2024.

HOW DOES THE FORMAT WORK?

United Women progressed to the ‘Group 1’ final following our semi-final win over PSV, with Hammarby having done the same after their aforementioned success over Metalist Kharkiv.

The second-round qualifying stage has been split into mini groups, with United now just one win away from a spot in the third round qualifying stage, which is slated as a two-legged affair for a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stages.

The third qualifying round involves nine two-legged ties, split between the champions path (four ties) and the league path (five ties). The winners of each of those games will then enter the league phase, with the defeated sides entering the Europa Cup at the second qualifying round stage.

That means even if United lose on Saturday, we could still ensure European football this term by virtue of the Europa Cup, which is debuting this season, although more qualifiers will be needed to ensure a spot in that competition’s own group stages.
