“Pointless to continue”: Ex-United man advises star not “cut out” for English football to leave Old Trafford

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi has told Andre Onana to move on in the summer as it is not working out at Old Trafford.

Taibi was brought to the club in 1999 but only played four games before leaving for Reggina after just one season.

The Italian was judged as a massive flop and conceded one of the softest goals Old Trafford has ever seen as he let a tame Matt Le Tissier shot slip through his grasp and bobble gently into the net.

Whilst Onana has performed much better than the Italian and played 76 times for the club in a season and a half, cracks are once again beginning to appear for the Cameroonian.

After a strong start to the season, he has had a poor December where he made clear individual errors against Nottingham Forest and Viktoria Plzen before being beaten directly from a corner against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day.

The Sun carry comments from Taibi stating that he believes Onana should leave United at the end of the season.

Discussing what advice he would give the former Inter Milan keeper he stated, “I’d be straight to the point and tell him, ‘Andre, you are one of the best keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under-performing’.”

“Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don’t change by June, move on’.”

He claimed that the United environment is “not ideal” for Onana and “when a marriage is showing cracks, it’s pointless to continue.”

Taibi claimed that he is not “cut out” for English football and that his skills would prosper elsewhere.

The Italian believes that Onana would be better equipped to play in French or Italian football and claimed it would not be a failure if he recognised this and swiftly left Old Trafford.

Taibi was quick to still back the keeper’s ability and claimed that whilst he is not suited to English football, he still remains “one of the best in Europe.”
