Under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United moved away from natural wingers and adopted a system built around two number 10s and a striker leading the attack. This tactical approach meant United prioritised playmakers over wide men, which led to the signings of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. While securing these key attacking players for the Portuguese tactician’s blueprint, the recruitment team ultimately made a mistake. Need for a left winger The Red Devils allowed all their left-sided options—Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho—to leave, but crucially failed to replace them. Following Amorim’s dismissal, United now find themselves without a recognised left winger. Although strengthening the midfield had been at the top of the club’s agenda, the urgency to recruit a winger has become equally pressing. Already, links to some of Europe’s finest wide players are circulating. Among them, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye has emerged as a notable target for the 20-time English champions. Ndiaye links The magical Cameroon winger has captured the attention of leading Premier League sides thanks to his exceptional close control, ability to thrive in tight spaces, and a direct, daring dribbling style that consistently creates opportunities for himself and his teammates. Liverpool were previously linked, but more recently, United have taken centre stage. At Old Trafford, the decision-makers are reportedly convinced he fits the profile they want to add in attack. Suggestions have even surfaced that United could, for around £75 million, lure the winger to M16. However, just as speculation mounted over whether INEOS might break Everton’s transfer sale record, an intriguing update emerged. Ndiaye responds to Everton exit links Even if United were to spend the money, Ndiaye is not yet inclined to leave Merseyside. According to Sport Boom: “Iliman Ndiaye has told Everton he has no interest in forcing through a move away from the Hill Dickinson Stadium, despite finding himself at the centre of a remarkable tug-of-war between arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester United.” The report adds: “Ndiaye has assuaged The Toffees’ fears that his head has been turned by that interest, telling Moyes that he has no intention of agitating for a transfer and remains fully committed to the club which rescued him from what proved a frustrating spell with Marseille.” If not Ndiaye, then who? Many will be left surprised by the AFCON winner’s stance, especially given the prospect of a headline switch to two of England’s biggest clubs. For INEOS, however, this may prove a blessing in disguise. Avoiding a drawn-out transfer saga allows them to pivot swiftly towards other attainable targets. One such option is Rafael Leao, with AC Milan reportedly “urging” United to make a move. The Portuguese winger could provide precisely the kind of threat required to reinvigorate United’s left wing.
