Manchester United fans staged a protest against the Glazer family before their Sunday meeting with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

A few days ago, the United supporter group ‘The 1958,” announced demonstration plans in a statement.

The group urged fans to don black outfits in an effort to underscore their message to those in charge. In their statement, The 1958 insisted the club is “slowly dying,” with the Glazers squarely to blame.

Participants were requested to gather at the Tollgate Pub at 3.15pm and march to the Trinity Monument before proceeding to the Munich Tunnel at Old Trafford.

Even before the protest kicked off, banners started to appear on railings around the stadium.

According to Manchester Evening News, a “massive crowd” gathered outside the Tollgate with banners. There were chants of “It’s your debt, not ours” and “we want Glazers out.”

United have been owned by the Glazers since a leveraged buyout in May 2005, which saddled the club with over £500 million in debt.

Even before the Glazers’ takeover, they faced strong opposition from United supporters, who were outraged at the idea of the previously debt-free and financially stable club being burdened with massive debt.

Discontent remains high even after Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake last year and assumed operational control of the Red Devils.

United have lost more than £300m over the past three seasons and recently announced there would be  up to 200 further redundancies, having axed 250 staff last summer.

The latest financial figures shared in February revealed that United forked out £14.5m to part ways with Erik ten Hag, his coaching team and former sporting director Dan Ashworth.

The numbers also highlighted that the club’s debt interest payments in the last six months summed to £18.8m.
