Manchester United were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford this evening. It was a clear missed opportunity for Man United, who should have comfortably secured three points against one of the poorest teams in the Premier League this season. Not only were United coming off a convincing 2-1 win over high-flyers Crystal Palace, but the team dominated the flow of play against West Ham, meaning that there was really no reason for the team to drop points as they did. Former United captain Roy Keane pulled no punches as he pointed out exactly why the club failed to win in his view. The mental issue “After they get the goal, you are playing against a team in the bottom three, they take their foot off the gas,” Keane explained, pointing out how United became complacent after scoring. “You’re 1-0 up! Take nothing away from West Ham, and they just about deserved the equaliser,” he continued. “You are just putting yourself under pressure. Every time I watch this United team, they disappoint. They aren’t clinical; they weren’t nasty enough to get the job done.” “People will be scratching their heads. One minute they are making progress, win and you go fifth. There will be a lot of frustration,” he added. Still, the United legend’s criticism of his former club didn’t end there. Standards aren’t high enough “United are making substitutions, and he is entitled to do that, but I was watching people come off, and it was like they had won the league,” Keane observed, suggesting that United were celebrating prematurely. “Show some intensity. It was all a bit, this is cool. You cannot be cool when you’re 1-0 up. Get the job done,” the former United skipper advised, highlighting how a one-goal lead is often insufficient, especially when playing in a competitive competition such as the Premier League. “United have better players than West Ham, but this is not a good United team. It was too relaxed, get the job done.” With the team set to face last-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers next, United need to get their heads on straight. Hopefully, Ruben Amorim and his players will take Keane’s valuable advice to heart so that they can build some real winning momentum as the season progresses.
