Manchester United have announced that Stephen Torpey has started his new role as the club’s Academy director.
United’s statement on Torpey
United issued a statement which reads, “Stephen Torpey has started work as Manchester United’s new Academy director.”
“Joining from Brentford, Stephen’s appointment as successor to Nick Cox was announced in August. Cox has joined Everton, where he’ll serve as technical director.”
“He began work at Carrington on Monday, and will attend the Under-21s’ exciting Premier League International Cup clash against Athletic Club at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.”
“Everyone at the club gives a warm welcome to Stephen and wishes him the best of luck in his new role.”
Torpey set to pick up the mantle from Cox
In June, United confirmed that Cox was poised to depart his role after nine successful years as United’s director of academy.
Under Cox’s leadership, United’s youth system was completely revitalised after a period of neglect. He was instrumental in transforming it into the talent conveyor belt it is today, while re-establishing Carrington’s reputation as one of the world’s premier academies.
Like Cox, Torpey boasts an impressive track record. After joining Brentford in 2024, he spearheaded the restructuring of their youth system, overseeing the relaunch of a full academy programme spanning Under-9s to Under-18s.
He also enjoyed successful spells at two of United’s bitter rivals – Manchester City and Liverpool.
During his time at City, Torpey was credited with helping develop players like Rico Lewis, James McAtee and Cole Palmer.
While at the Etihad, Torpey worked closely with United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim and his players are back in action on Saturday when they take on Torpey’s former club, Brentford, at the Gtech Community Stadium.
