Official: promising England international becomes United women’s first signing of the January window

Manchester United Women’s team have beaten Ruben Amorim’s men’s side to the punch with regards to incomings in the January transfer market.

Having started the season in strong fashion, Marc Skinner is looking to add to his ranks and push on for a successful second half of the campaign.

As confirmed by the club’s official website, United have made a start by signing promising young goalkeeper, Kayla Rendell, from Southampton.

The 23-year-old has agreed a deal until the summer of 2027 with the club holding an option of a 12-month extension.

Rendell chalked up an impressive 134 appearances for the Saints where she made her name after progressing through the ranks as a teenager.

She has since been called up to the England senior squad after representing her country at every age group from Under-17s to Under-23s.

Rendell expressed her delight at the move and is desperate to continue her growth under Skinner at United.

“It’s a dream to be signing for Manchester United and I can’t wait to join the group and get started. I’m ready to take the next step in my career and play my part in pushing for success at United,” she said.

The stopper also had words of gratitude for her former club who nurtured her from an early age and gave Rendell the chance to achieve her dream.

“I want to thank Southampton for all the support and opportunities they have given me since joining as a nine-year-old girl. I will always cherish so many fantastic memories of my time there,” she added.

Since losing England number 1 Mary Earps in the summer, Phallon Tullis-Joyce has impressed between the sticks for United with Skinner’s team conceding a league-low three goals in their first ten games.

Rendell will no doubt be vying for the number one jersey in time but is likely to provide back-up to Tullis-Joyce for now, given her outstanding form.

United Women are currently sat fourth in the Super League table but only a point off Manchester City in second with champions Chelsea the favourites for the title owing to their six-point advantage at the top.

Skinner’s side are in action this afternoon as they begin their defence of the FA Cup at home to West Bromwich Albion.
