New attendance record for United Women in Leigh
Monday 22 September 2025 10:58
Sunday’s draw with Arsenal was watched by a record crowd for a Manchester United Women fixture at Leigh Sports Village.
While there may have been no goals on the pitch in the 0-0 stalemate, a reason to celebrate was provided from the stands, with the 8,665 in attendance a new high at the team’s primary home ground.
United fans and a sizeable number of travelling Arsenal supporters helped to pack out all four sides of the stadium, ensuring a count that eclipses the previous record of 8,348, set at our corresponding clash with the Gunners last season.
This is now the fourth campaign running in which the team’s highest Leigh Sports Village attendance has been topped. It has happened in the last three terms at the WSL fixture we’ve hosted against the north Londoners.
The Reds’ first home game of the 2023/24 season saw a previous record of 8,312 at LSV for a 2-2 draw with Arsenal, while the points were also shared in 2024/25 as the bar was raised again, with 8,348 clicking through the turnstiles in WN7.
United Women’s all-time home attendance record remains the 43,615 that watched November 2023’s derby duel with Manchester City at Old Trafford, but the impact of the 8,000-plus in Leigh on Sunday shouldn’t be understated.
Head coach Marc Skinner made sure to thank those supporters, explaining how those of a United persuasion helped to push his team on, just three days after a historic but energy-zapping UEFA Champions League win over Brann on the same pitch.
“Thank you to the fans today, we needed you! We were tired,” the boss said to MUTV’s Ben Ibson post-match.
“We were tired because we’ve worked so hard and I loved just walking round and hearing our fans singing: ‘We’re going on a European tour.’
“I want to keep creating history for this club and our fans, they were special for us today and hopefully we can have many more moments of quality for them.”
Matt Johnson, United’s director of women’s football, has also highlighted the significance of the attendance milestone and underlined the importance of the Reds continuing to play in front of big crowds going forward.
He added: “As a club, we are determined to grow the women’s game and our fanbase. It’s great to see that, for a fourth successive season, we have set an attendance record for a home game at LSV.
“It’s key now we build on this moment and look to fill the stadium in the future.”
United Women’s next home game is against WSL champions Chelsea at Leigh Sports Village on Friday 3 October. Tickets are available here!
