Mount excited for Ruben’s system to ‘click’

Wednesday 23 April 2025 16:00

Mason Mount is confident that Ruben Amorim’s style of play will soon ‘click’ at Manchester United, and believes the results could be very special when it does.

Having played in a similar system during his time at Chelsea, it was widely acknowledged that Mason could be crucial to Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side when our head coach joined back in November.

Unfortunately, despite playing in five of Ruben’s first six games in charge, Mount suffered an injury the following month — during our 2-1 derby victory at Manchester City — which ruled him out until the start of April.

In that time, our no.7 was still a big part of the squad, offering advice to the many young players coming through and learning the intricacies of Ruben’s system alongside his team-mates.

And, having witnessed a similar transition to a new system as a Chelsea player, Mount is convinced by Amorim’s work and the team’s ability to achieve success soon.

Catching up with club media for the first time since Ruben’s arrival, Mount’s immediate reaction when discussing his boss was emphatic.

“He’s been brilliant,” he said, of the months since Amorim took charge.

“I’d seen the way he likes to play and the formations he’d played in Portugal. It’s something that I’ve been used to and I’ve played in the past, so I know the kind of movement he likes. It’s very similar. So I knew I could be helping the lads around me understand the formation.

“It’s very difficult when you change from one formation to another. It can be quite a big difference, so, at the beginning, it takes some time to get used to and to click. But once you do find that moment that it does, I think it can be very special.

“I think we’re so close to that. There’s still small details here and there. The small details are so important when you’re playing at this level and this type of formation.”

It’s clear that results and performances need to improve from this United team, especially in the Premier League. But Mount says, during his time spent out injured, he could see the small details improving.

“Unfortunately, I picked up an injury that had me sidelined for some time, but I’ve obviously worked as hard as I could to get back, and I was watching it from the stands,” he began.

“You can see the improvement that’s happened over the last couple of months. I think the results will come. We’ve been working really hard as a team, and I think, in some games, you can see the improvement that we’re getting there.”

While United’s focus is very much on progressing to the Europa League final in Bilbao, fans will be eager to see further signs of progress in our Premier League fixtures, starting with Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth.
