Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has requested that his SSC Napoli side sign fellow Carrington graduate, Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo’s struggles The two played successfully under Erik ten Hag, winning the FA Cup final together in 2024. Nonetheless, injury problems held back the young star in the 2024/2025 season and he struggled to find a place in Ruben Amorim’s first eleven. Mainoo has played in eight matches this season but only for a combined total of 228 minutes. Transfer speculation This has fuelled speculation that the player is unhappy and he reportedly wanted to leave the club on loan before the summer window ended. The midfielder has been linked to numerous clubs in England and abroad with the player reportedly “desperate” to join Real Madrid this January according to Spanish press. It has also been suggested that West Ham United are interested and that SSC Napoli are in “advanced talks” to agree a deal with the 20 year old. McTominay demand Napoli have already signed McTominay permanently and Rasmus Hojlund on loan with the Italians’ taste for United players showing no signs of abating. The Sun report that, the Scotland international “has urged Napoli to swoop on Manchester United again and snap up unhappy England star Kobbie Mainoo.” The story adds that “a source has told SunSport his former team-mate McTominay, 28, has informed Napoli boss Antonio Conte he should try and lure Mainoo to Serie A.” The article continues, “Scott has been to see Conte and told him to get Kobbie. He’s told him all about his strengths and what an outstanding player he is. He knows all about him from his time at United and thinks he would be a great addition to the squad, whether it’s on loan or a permanent deal.” What’s more, the fact that Mainoo has risen through the United academy from a young age, like McTominay, is supposedly another attractive quality that the Italians see in the midfielder.
