Match preview: United v Everton

Saturday 30 November 2024 14:10

It’s a quick return to Premier League action for Manchester United, who host Everton this weekend on the back of Thursday’s European victory over Bodo/Glimt.

That victory over the Norwegian champions at Old Trafford was new head coach Ruben Amorim’s first win at the helm, and the 39-year-old is now looking forward to taking charge of his maiden domestic home match as Reds boss in Sunday’s 13:30 GMT kick-off.

Ahead of it, we’ve got everything you need to know here in our comprehensive match guide, from essential live coverage info to the latest team news and more…

HOW TO FOLLOW

Sunday’s game will not be broadcast live in the UK, but United fans around the world can keep across the action via official club platforms.

We will bring you over an hour of exclusive build-up from Old Trafford via our Matchday Live show which begins at 12:25 GMT, before your live radio commentary of the fixture from M16.

You can tune in via ManUtd.com and the United app too, with post-match analysis and reaction from past and present Reds to follow after the final whistle.

Our channels are also the place to be for rolling updates, in-game stats and plenty more during the encounter via our Match Centre, as well as a bitesize edit of the highlights two hours after the contest concludes. Longer versions will be published on Monday morning.

TEAM NEWS

Central defenders Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro all missed our Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt on Thursday and their availability for Sunday’s return to Premier League action remains unclear.

The same can be said for Antony, who was withdrawn from his right-wing-back role in the midweek win due to an injury, according to Amorim. Tyrell Malacia completed his first 45 minutes of senior action in 550 days on the other flank, while recent absentee Kobbie Mainoo returned to the matchday squad for the first time since October, but was an unused substitute.

As for Everton, United Academy graduate James Garner has been ruled out of a reunion with his old club this weekend because of a back injury, while Youssef Chermiti, club captain Seamus Coleman and Tim Iroegbunam will also miss the encounter.

Striker Armando Broja, on loan from Chelsea, could make his senior debut for the Toffees though, having returned from a sideline spell to start and play 72 minutes for the club’s Under-21s in their clash with Nottingham Forest on Friday evening.

OPPOSITION REPORT

The Toffees currently occupy 15th position in the Premier League table and, despite being just two points above the relegation zone going into this weekend’s matches, have proved that they are a tough side to get the better of in recent months.

Since starting the top-flight campaign with four successive defeats, Sean Dyche’s team have only lost one of their last eight outings in the competition, conceding just four goals across that time.

Finding the net at the other end has been a factor behind the five draws in that run however, with the Blues’ 10 goals in their opening 12 games the joint-lowest in the division so far this term.

A recent injury to chief goal-getter Dwight McNeil won’t have helped that cause, but the United Academy graduate did return to starting XI against Brentford last weekend and is expected to be involved against his former club on Sunday afternoon.

McNeil has three Premier League goals to his name in 2024/25.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to stats guru Opta, United have won 41 Premier League games against Everton, more than any side has beaten another in the competition’s history.

Victories in each of our last four league meetings with the Toffees has bolstered that record, with the most recent coming back at Old Trafford in March – a 2-0 success, that saw both Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford on the scoresheet from the penalty spot.
