Mason Greenwood involved in heated exchange with manager, shock summer exit on cards – report

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is facing an uncertain future at Olympique de Marseille, as per reports.

Greenwood, who graduated from United’s academy, had to leave his boyhood club due to his alleged off-field conduct.

In 2023, he moved to Getafe on a season-long loan and impressed many with his exploits in Spain. Still, because of the circumstances that paved the way for his initial exit, United didn’t welcome him back into their first team fold.

Last summer, the Red Devils agreed to part ways with him on a permanent basis, agreeing to sell him to Marseille in a deal worth over £26 million.

Greenwood took little time to find his feet in France and established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most exciting attackers. The 23-year-old has already bagged 15 goals in France’s top flight.

However, the Englishman has once again received backlash for his behaviour behind the scenes, leading to question marks over his future in the south of France.

According to RMC Sport (via the Manchester Evening News), Greenwood’s perceived “nonchalance”, “attitude” and “lack of effort” have not been received well by the coaching staff and a summer departure is possible if he doesn’t patch things up with his manager.

Marseille want to keep Greenwood, who is attracting interest from a number of top European clubs, including Bayern Munich. However, the situation at the Orange Vélodrome is worrying, to say the least.

It is claimed that on one occasion, Roberto De Zerbi “flew into a rage while criticising Greenwood’s commitment during training.”

Following the heated exchange, Greenwood was dropped from the starting lineup against Lens earlier this month.

The ex-United man was also absent from the starting lineup against Paris Saint-Germain before the international break. He was introduced as a second-half substitute but could do little to save his side from losing 3-1 in Le Classique at the Parc des Princes.

The Italian tactician couldn’t hide his discontent with Greenwood in the post-match interview, insisting his star forward needs to be in good physical condition.

As United have a 50 per cent sell-on clause, any summer movement should grab the attention of the club’s hierarchy who could certainly do with extra funds in the transfer window.
