Man Utd sign young goalkeeper who can become Senne Lammens’ backup

Manchester United have reportedly secured the services of young Derby County goalkeeper Charlie Hardy, who will now join the club’s academy. The 16-year-old is considered among the finest teenage shot-stoppers on the English shores, as evidenced by the five appearances he made for England U16.While this move has been in the air for quite some time, The Athletic has now confirmed that the youngster has indeed signed for Man Utd.Charlie Hardy joins Man UnitedHardy has signed a scholarship deal, but he’ll be able to pen his maiden professional contract once he turns 17 in July.In the meantime, the goalkeeper will join Man Utd U18, where he’ll have the opportunity to hone his skills under the tutelage of Darren Fletcher and his technical staff. The teenager had already confirmed his departure from Derby County by penning an open letter to his boyhood club and its supporters.“After almost a decade at Derby County, the time has now come for a new chapter. It’s been an incredible nine years here.” wrote Hardy on his Instagram account a few weeks ago.“I just want to thank everyone at the club who has supported me throughout my journey and helped me to become the player and person I am today. I’m grateful for all the memories I’ve made throughout my time at the club and the lads I’ve played alongside, I wish everyone at the club the best for the future.”Man Utd’s goalkeeping department set for additional changes(Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images)Man United made a substantial improvement to their goalkeeping department last summer by recruiting Senne Lammens on a deadline-day transfer, before sending Andre Onana to Trabzonspor on loan. The Belgian has already established himself as a beloved figure at Old Trafford after just two appearances, as he played a vital role in Man Utd’s back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Liverpool.Nevertheless, the Red Devils will require additional depth in this particular department, as Altay Bayindir has yet to convince, while 39-year-old Tom Heaton is a mere backup.Radek Vitek is trying to make the most out of his loan stint at Bristol City, as at least one spot will be up for grabs at Carrington. As for Hardy, it remains too early to tell whether he’ll ever be able to make the jump to the first team, but we’ve seen Ruben Amorim giving opportunities to teenagers who are only slightly older than the Man Utd newcomer, the likes of Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven.
