BACK David Tully Nov 26th 2025 There is “optimism” that Man Utd will secure the services of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes “by the turn of the year”, according to reports in Brazil. Globo Esporte claims that “talks” between the Red Devils and Wolves have intensified in recent days, and there is likely to be a resolution before the next transfer window opens on January 1st. Gomes is valued at around €50m (£44m), and while Wolves are said to be reluctant to sell, they are aware that their precarious position in the Premier League puts them at a disadvantage. If they wait until the end of the season and they are relegated, they won’t be able to demand such a high asking price. That could force their hand to sell now rather than next summer. Gomes is reportedly keen on joining Man Utd It was reported at the weekend that the Brazilian international has effectively given his approval to making the switch to Old Trafford. Agreeing personal terms is unlikely to be a major obstacle in negotiations. According to Capology, Gomes earns £105,000 a week, making him Wolves’ best paid player. However, if he were to take the same salary at United, the midfielder would only be joint 15th with Joshua Zirkzee. Of course, he would probably request a bigger wage than that but he is still not expected to trouble the top earners. Amorim has expressed a need for reinforcements Asked before the Everton game whether he would like to bring in extra bodies in the middle of the park, head coach Ruben Amorim said: “It is hard to say that (we are looking at midfield signings), but I think we can add in the future. I don’t know when… sometimes it is not the quality of the players, it is the characteristics of the players, and we can improve in some areas in our club.” Read more about the Manchester United First Team Squad for 2025/26 here David Tully David has worked as a football reporter for the last fifteen years.
