Manchester United are working “behind the scenes” to sign Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, according to reports in Spain.
Marca claim that the 22-year-old has rejected a new contract and he could be offloaded before the transfer window closes.
Valencia are said to be demanding €20m (£17.3m), but as Guerra’s previous team, Villarreal, hold 30% of his “economic rights”, a fee close to €27m (£23.4m) will be needed.
It is believed that United are “willing” to go as high as €25m (£21.6m) to secure the Spanish Under 21 international’s signature and Marca report that this is enough to begin negotiations between the two parties.
What do fans need to know about Guerra?
If you want a detailed profile of the player, you can read our article here, which we put together earlier this month when he was first linked with a move to Old Trafford.
To summarise, Guerra has been a regular starter for Valencia since he made his first-team debut in April 2023. Before that, he had been playing senior football for Los Ches’s B team in Spain’s lower divisions.
Although he is ostensibly a No.8, he has also been used as a No.6, a No.10, a support striker and even as a wingback.
Man United have looked at other midfielders
The Red Devils are looking to strengthen their options in the middle of the park, and Guerra is by no means the only player who has come under consideration.
Sporting Lisbon’s Morten Hjulmand was mentioned as a potential target last week. The Dane has, of course, worked under Ruben Amorim before. He was actually made captain by the Portuguese coach last summer.
Reports in France have also suggested that United are interested in Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso, while Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi is said to be on the club’s shortlist as well.
In other news, Man United have been tipped to sign TWO strikers worth a combined £129m
