Man United are unlikely to trigger their option to keep Jadon Sancho for another year, according to reports.
While the 25-year-old’s current deal with the Red Devils expires next summer, there is a clause that would allow them to retain his services until 2027 if they so wish.
That option could be triggered if United don’t want Sancho to leave on a free transfer, but TEAMtalk claim there is a good chance that they will release him next June.
Since his return from Chelsea in July, the club has struggled to offload the forward on a permanent basis. It led to him being loaned out to Aston Villa.
The Villans have no intention of paying a transfer fee for Sancho, even if they decide to keep him, so there is a danger of United being left with a player they don’t want next year if they trigger their contract extension.
Letting Sancho go would save the club millions
Villa are currently paying 80% of the winger’s £250,000 a week wages, but by keeping him for a further year, the Red Devils would effectively be adding an extra £13m to their wage bill for the 2026/27 season.
For that reason, there is an argument for cutting their losses on Sancho in 2025, rather than dragging things out even further in the hope of receiving a transfer fee of some kind.
Man United could see an exodus of players next summer
In addition to Sancho, the likes of Harry Maguire, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Tom Heaton all have contracts that expire on June 30th.
Out of those five players, it is believed that the Manchester club only want one of them to stay – Maguire. Even in that instance, though, reports suggest that they will ask the defender to take a pay cut on his current £190,000 a week salary.
