Man United could reportedly rival Manchester City to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
The Red Devils are in a position of turbulence at the moment, with serious pressure growing on manager Ruben Amorim after they lost 3-0 to rivals Man City at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon. The United boss has insisted that he will stick to his 3-4-3 formation, despite the recent results.
If Amorim were to stick to his system, he will need to find players in January that are more suited to it, rather than trying to shoehorn United’s current players into the formation. That brings us to the wing-back position.
Patrick Dorgu looked to struggle last year, but more recently, he has looked more comfortable and could be the reliable long-term option on the left-hand side. However, Diogo Dalot is not a wing-back, and the Portuguese defender has struggled to be comfortable in the attacking role. Furthermore, Amad Diallo isn’t comfortable dropping back into the wing-back position, so United will need to sign someone in between the two.
Man United are reportedly keen on Dumfries
Amid the need for an attacking right-back, the perfect opportunity has emerged, and it comes in the form of Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
Man City were heavily linked to Dumfries in the summer transfer window as a replacement for Kyle Walker, but they decided not to sign him. It is understood that City are still keen, but they may now face competition from Man United.
According to Football Insider, Man United are monitoring Dumfries’ situation at Inter, and could make a move for him in January, especially if City decide against moving for the Dutch international.
Dumfries has made over 420 career appearances, and has managed to score 45 goals, which is a decent return for a full-back. Last season, he made 47 appearances for Inter in an attacking role, and he scored 11 goals, and six assists.
With those sorts of numbers in terms of attacking returns, the 29-year-old could be exactly what United are looking for on the right-wing, with an in-between role of Dalot and Diallo. It is certainly a transfer story to keep an eye on.
