Tyrell Malacia has officially been registered in Manchester United’s 2025/2026 Premier League squad list.
In a surprising turn of events at Old Trafford, the outcast defender could be on the verge of making his return to first-team action under Ruben Amorim, despite being cast aside to the ‘bomb squad’ over the summer.

What happened with Tyrell Malacia this summer?

He could only watch on in recent months as Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all secured moves elsewhere. Malacia did come close to signing for Elche on loan before last Monday’s deadline, but the deal fell through when the sides failed to reach an agreement on a buy option or obligation.
Then, he received an offer to join Super Lig outfit Eyupspor on loan, given Turkey’s window didn’t close until yesterday. However, Malacia was said to be uninterested in the move and closed off the prospect of following Andre Onana to the league.
United forced to U-turn on Malacia’s future
As such, United are now seemingly planning to move forward with the 26-year-old in Amorim’s ranks. At the end of the day, it’s not as if he actually fell out with the coach in the same way as Alejandro Garnacho.
It will be a struggle for Malacia to stake his claim for a prominent role in Amorim’s plans. Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu already rank above him in the pecking order, and the side is playing only one game a week this campaign.
Amorim also made it clear in the winter that he didn’t see Malacia as a key part in his project, as the Dutch international was sent on loan to PSV Eindhoven for the second half of 2024/2025. He ended the term with an Eredivisie winners’ medal to his name, but the club opted against making his transfer permanent.
The full-back, signed by Erik ten Hag in 2022, is contracted to United until 2026, plus the option of an additional 12 months.
