Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund could be making his way back to Serie A this summer after a desperate second season at Old Trafford.
The young Dane failed to improve on his decent first campaign in Manchester with Ruben Amorim now ready to move him on in the upcoming transfer window.
Inter Milan were believed to be the frontrunners to capture the signature of the 22-year-old but now face stiff competition in the shape of last season’s Scudetto winners, Napoli.
As reported by Italian media, Antonio Conte is keen to bolster his attacking options and Hojlund’s name is firmly in the mix.
The report suggests Napoli have “enquired” about Hojlund’s availability and describe the response from his team as “positive” which could encourage a formal bid from Naples in the coming days.
Inter will no doubt be aware of the situation and may have to speed up their decision making with regard to placing a bid, leaving United in strong position.
United will be hoping for the start of a bidding war between the two Italian giants as they attempt to recoup as much of the £72 million paid to Atalanta just two years ago.
Should Hojlund join Conte’s side, he would link up with former teammate at United, Scott McTominay, who won enjoyed a fine campaign in Naples last year, winning the Serie A Player of the Year award, alongside the league title.
Hojlund would be hoping for a similar upturn in fortunes after a torturous season that will have no doubt have rocked his confidence to the core.
With just 10 goals in 52 appearances and struggling to make a positive impact throughout the campaign, the bright lights of Old Trafford have proven too much for the Hojlund who did show signs of promise in his first twelve months.
If United do manage to strike a deal with either of the Serie A clubs, the funds are expected to go directly back into the transfer kitty to help Amorim build a side more suited to his style of play.
Hojlund did look tailor made for Amorim’s philosophy but has struggled badly since the arrival of the Portuguese head coach and a parting of the ways feels like the best thing all round this summer.
