Maguire receives fresh hope in bid to clear his name as Greek court battle takes crucial turn – report

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been handed a major boost in the fight to clear his name as his Greek assault case takes a crucial turn.

Maguire was given a 21-month suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer in August 2020. The incident took place outside a bar on the island of Mykonos.

He immediately appealed against the guilty verdict, which was then quashed.

The England international was initially found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult. Two of his loved ones – his brother Joe and close friend Christopher Sharman – were also accused of being involved in a brawl with rival fans and police outside a nightclub.

Joe and Sharman each received a 13-month suspended sentence. Like Maguire, the pair denied the charges.

Maguire’s trial was first delayed in May 2023 because his counsel was not available, and then again in February 2024 due to a Greek lawyers’ strike.

There were plans for the case to be heard on March 25 of this year but it didn’t happen, denying Maguire his day in court and the opportunity to set the record straight.

However, the Daily Mail now report that a new date has been set.

Maguire gets new court date

According to the newspaper, “Confidential has learned that the new date is October 8 of this year when Maguire will hopefully have his day in court.”

“He is set to be on England duty against Wales a day later, but it’s understood that he won’t have to appear in court in person.”

Maguire is currently in the United States with the rest of the squad for the club’s pre-season tour. He didn’t travel with the main group, only joining later due to an unknown personal reason.

The 32-year-old featured in both victories against West Ham and Bournemouth.
