Maguire hits appearance landmark

While the circumstances were not as he would have wanted, Harry Maguire made his 250th Manchester United appearance as a substitute in Sunday’s derby defeat to City.

The 32-year-old was introduced off the bench, replacing Leny Yoro, to rack up a quarter of a century of games for the club he joined from Leicester City in 2019.

It means, with a little bit of licence regarding positioning, that he is the 10th centre-back to have played for United in the Premier League and appeared in 250 matches in all competitions.

We are counting Wes Brown, the extremely versatile John O’Shea and Mikael Silvestre as central defenders, but not Luke Shaw, even though he is currently playing that role after making his name as a left-back.

Rio Ferdinand, 20th overall when it comes to representing the Reds, leads this particular chart with 455 outings under his belt, ahead of the famed first Premier League title-winning partners Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce.

Maguire is now joint-89th, with Stewart Houston, when it comes to the full list and he is on 169 league appearances for the club.
