League Cup preview: Everton v United Women

Tuesday 19 November 2024 13:41

Manchester United Women’s League Cup campaign continues with a visit to Everton on Wednesday evening, which you can watch live on MUTV.

Marc Skinner’s Reds will have the opportunity to make it two wins from two in this season’s competition during the 19:00 GMT kick-off, which will be played at Walton Hall Park in Merseyside.

Ahead of our trip across the north west, here is everything you need to know, starting with the live coverage info…

HOW CAN I WATCH THE GAME?

MUTV will be on air from 18:55 GMT, five minutes before kick-off, to bring you live and exclusive coverage of the Group A tie, which will also be viewable via ManUtd.com and the United app.

Official club platforms are the place to be for the team news pre-match, in-game updates and the post-match highlights, which will be available in the hours after the final whistle.

Our away allocation of tickets for the fixture has sold out, but supporters heading to Walton Hall Park can still arrange coach travel from Old Trafford here.

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?

Skinner confirmed during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday morning that midfielder Ella Toone will miss this game, and the weekend’s WSL trip to Chelsea, with a calf problem picked up in training prior to Sunday’s win at Leicester City.

There was no further update in the manager’s presser on Toone’s fellow midfielder Lisa Naalsund, who is expected to be sidelined until after the international break with a foot issue, or winger Leah Galton, whom Marc hoped could return from injury for this clash.

As for Everton, manager Brian Sorensen may provide a fresh update during his own pre-match media duties. The Toffees boss will have been pleased that defender Lucy Hope was able to overcome a “physical problem” to play the entirety of Sunday’s derby victory over Liverpool.

Inma Gabbaro, Aurora Galli, Elise Stenevik and Kenzie Weir are all long-term absentees who are set to miss the encounter however, while Karen Holmgaard is edging closer to a return from injury.

OPPOSITION REPORT

The weekend’s 1-0 win over local rivals Liverpool, in the last-ever WSL derby to be played at Goodison Park, was a welcome result for Sorensen and his side.

Despite holding Arsenal to a draw at the Emirates Stadium last month and starting their League Cup campaign by picking up two points away to Newcastle (by winning the penalty shootout after a draw in 90 minutes), the Toffees had been yet to claim a first triumph of the season.

Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, a Republic of Ireland international, was instrumental to Sunday’s success and has since called on her side to get some momentum rolling, ahead of Wednesday’s clash with United.

“It’s a great win for us, but it’s just one win, and we’re not satisfied with that. It’s a long season and we have a lot of other teams to play,” she told Everton’s official website. “We need to keep progressing, keep that momentum and keep moving forwards in the direction we want to go.”

The goalkeeper showed her qualities in our league meeting with Everton earlier this season.

LEAGUE CUP STANDINGS

United are a point ahead of Everton at the top of the Group A rankings, after beating Liverpool 2-0 on matchday one, back in October.

With only the first-place finisher advancing to the quarter-finals, victory on Wednesday night would be a big boost to our hopes of making the last eight, ahead of our final group-stage fixture against Newcastle in December.

The Magpies, who play their league football in the Championship, are currently third on one point after drawing with Everton in their first-ever League Cup outing last time out and host Liverpool on Sunday, who will be looking to get their first points of the campaign.

BACK IN SEPTEMBER…

Skinner’s Reds came out on top in the previous meeting between Everton and United, in both teams’ second game of the current WSL season.

Grace Clinton’s fourth-minute strike was enough for us to take all three points home from Walton Hall Park in what was a closely contested encounter with the Toffees.

The result continued a favourable run for us in the fixture’s history, which has seen us go unbeaten in our last 12 meetings with the Blues, but we can expect another strong test on Wednesday night.
