Key United target eyeing mammoth 400% salary increase as Old Trafford move gathers pace – report

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is reportedly eyeing a blockbuster wage hike as Manchester United ramp up their pursuit of him.

United have made a fast start to the summer transfer window, following a miserable 2024/25 season that saw them finish a lowly 15th place in the Premier League table.

Ruben Amorim is desperate to bolster his squad in a bid to make United a truly competitive outfit once again, and no part of the pitch is in more need of strengthening than the attacking department. United only scored 44 top-flight goals and ended the campaign with a -11 goal difference.

On Sunday, the Red Devils announced the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. But the club’s ambitions don’t stop there, with work already being done to strike a deal for Mbeumo. On Monday, David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed that Mbeumo has chosen to move to United, despite interest from other suitors including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle.

The Cameroonian enjoyed the most prolific season of his career, notching an impressive 20 Premier League goals and providing an additional eight assists.

It’s understood that United are set to open talks with Brentford soon. The Bees value the player at around £50m – £60m.

According to Nathan Salt of the Daily Mail, personal terms “will not be an issue” with Mbeumo, so it is down to the agreement United can reach with Brentford.

The Times claim that Mbeumo “is hoping” for a five-fold wage increase to £250,000 a week if he departs the GTech Community Stadium this summer.

The newspaper states that the 25-year-old currently pockets about £50,000 a week.

“United are looking to offload two of their higher earners, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who are both on about £300,000 a week. That would free up space on the wage bill, though Mbeumo would still become one of the club’s highest-paid players if he gets the salary he wants.”

The next few days will be crucial as United go about trying to land Mbeumo early on in the window.

While the £250,000 a week figure is eye-catching, it’s important to wait for confirmation from other sources, though it’s likely both parties will eventually reach a middle ground.
