Key quotes: Ruben’s press conference in Hong Kong

Thursday 29 May 2025 13:50

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that it’s hard to face our passionate fans in Asia after a difficult season, but says it’s important that we are able to reward their unwavering support on this post-season tour.

United arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday, just under 24 hours after playing our first game in Malaysia for 16 years, against the ASEAN All-Stars.

The Reds are now looking ahead to our second and final game of the post-season trip to Asia, with Hong Kong, China providing the opposition in Friday’s 13:00 BST kick-off, which you can watch live on MUTV.

Amorim previewed the fixture in a pre-match press conference, where he was joined by Amad, earlier today. You can read his key quotes below, starting with those words on the local fan base…

IMPORTANT WE GIVE SOMETHING TO FANS

“I think everybody understands it’s a really hard context because we had the season we had, and it’s hard in this moment to face the fans around the world. We want to finish this season but at the same time we want to give something to the fans. If there’s one thing that’s really important in this club, it’s that we need to face our fans in this moment.”

NORMAL THAT GARNACHO IS HERE

“It’s not a surprise [that Garnacho came to Asia]. He’s a player of Manchester United, all the players are here. Some players have an injury and it was better not to fly here to play these two games. It’s a normal situation, it’s okay.”

TEAM NEWS

“We have three players [Dalot, Maguire and Onana] who have gone to India to give something to the fans around the world. All of them are going to play [otherwise]. If there is a physical issue, they cannot play. But if they are available, they will play this game.”

WET WEATHER FORECAST

“I don’t think [there will be injuries due to the conditions]. I haven’t seen the pitch, we are going to pay attention to that, but we are ready to cope with any pitch. If we are professional and try to do things in the right way, focus on the game, it’s the best way to protect our players from any injuries.”

BOOING IN MALAYSIA

“Let’s focus on all the game. Every time a player for Manchester United touched the ball, especially in the beginning, the stadium went crazy. The environment was really good. We did our lap at the end and the fans were supporting our team, so I think it was more supportive than the opposite.”

WHAT BEING UNITED HEAD COACH MEANS

“It’s more than a coach. On this tour, I had a small meeting with the Prime Minister of Malaysia. You have to improve as a person, as a leader, you have to control the momentum. Sometimes after games you see I’m really frustrated, I’m trying to control that. The only thing I want is to improve the team and have results, when you have results you can manage the team so much easier.”
