Manchester United have so far watched their key striker targets move to rivals, with Ekitike joining Liverpool and Gyokeres heading to Arsenal.
So, once again, the Red Devils are focusing on a short term fix with a proven Premier League player in sight.
News – £13m-£17m player has given approval to sign for Manchester United – Report
According to Ben Jacobs, Man Utd have held fresh discussions to hire the services of Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
The Villa Park outfit are demanding a mammoth fee of £60m for the 29-year-old, but the Old Trafford club are ready to move in for a cheaper deal.
Jacobs wrote on his X account:
“Manchester United have held fresh talks over Ollie Watkins. Villa’s £60m valuation currently deemed as too high, but #MUFC prepared to advance things if price drops. Villa have no plans to alter their position unless a replacement is found. Nicolas Jackson one player appreciated.”
Man Utd have so far lured two PL proven stars in the form of Cunha and Mbeumo, so, Watkins, if signed from Villa, will be another shrewd acquisition.
The England international, who netted the winning goal in the Euro 2024 semi final against the Netherlands last year, was one of the best players under Unai Emery last term.
The 18-capped star featured in all games in the league, scored sixteen goals and also provided eight assists.
Twenty four goal contributions in thirty one starts is highly impressive and he would be a definite upgrade on the likes of Zirkzee and Hojlund, who directly contributed in a combined ten goals in the PL.
United should act fast to lure a top center forward so that he can fit into Amorim’s system before the start of the new PL campaign.
The question is, should Man Utd offer £60m to Villa to sign Watkins, who will turn 30 in December?
