“It’s not going well today”: United star with growing catalogue of errors finally opens up on his disastrous form

Andre Onana’s form has been nothing short of disastrous since Ruben Amorim took over as Manchester United’s new head coach back in November of last year.

From high-profile errors in both the Europa League and Premier League, the Cameroonian’s catalogue of mistakes since joining the club keeps on increasing by the day.

That has naturally led to rumours of the Portuguese tactician being unhappy with the United No 1 with the Red Devils potentially open to moving on the former Inter Milan ace in the summer while also hunting for an able replacement.

But the 28-year-old has clearly not been paying much attention to the outside noise with the United shot-stopper confident that his situation and that of the club will change soon.

Onana on the United challenge

In an interview with Media Carré (as relayed by L’Attaquant), the Cameroon international said he has always had to face challenges wherever he has gone and he’s relishing the current one at Old Trafford.

“Everywhere I’ve been I’ve had challenges, but this is a wonderful one… United have had difficult situations, and that’s the case at the moment. But I’m confident that situation will change.”

And that involves having the mental fortitude to deal with criticism while remaining positive and working hard in training to improve.

He also added that the ultimate objective for the entire squad is to help the Red Devils climb back up the ladder of English football.

“In times of difficulty, you always have to try to find the positive side. It’s not going well today, but it will be better tomorrow. Our main objective is to put Manchester back in its place, the biggest club in the country. Our opponents are well prepared, like City or Liverpool. The Premier League is an extremely tough championship.”

It was former boss Erik ten Hag who was responsible for bringing Onana to Old Trafford with the 20-time English league champions paying Inter Milan £47.2 million in the summer of 2023.

Most fans were delighted with the capture given previous incumbent David de Gea’s faltering standards and the ex-Ajax star’s imperious form in Italy.

Onana on not saying no to United

But those displays have clearly not translated in the colours of United but Onana remains confident that he can change the situation for the better.

In fact, the shot-stopper revealed that plenty of his well-wishers had warned him not to join the three-time European winners due to the on-pitch troubles and off-field turmoils.

But the 28-year-old took up the challenge without a moment’s hesitation given the history of the club.

“I already knew about the difficulties. Some players wrote to me asking me to prepare because it rains all the time and I was at risk of being depressed. But you can’t say no to Manchester United. They’re an institution. Once the offer came, I said: Let’s go!”

Amorim will be hoping Onana can come good given INEOS’ limited transfer budget in the summer. It is unlikely that the club can afford to sign a goalkeeper on top of a striker and midfielder.
