“It’ll take a while for the news to sink in”: United icon reacts after being bestowed country’s ultimate honour

Manchester United legend David Beckham has expressed his pride at receiving a knighthood, following his award of the country’s highest honour.

Beckham was officially handed a knighthood in King Charles’ Birthday Honours list.

The accolade has been awarded to Beckham for his services to sport and to charity. It brings an end to his long wait for the title, having been snubbed multiple times in the past.

The former United midfielder has served as an ambassador for Unicef since 2005. He became an ambassador for King Charles’ charity, The King’s Foundation, in 2024.

Beckham, who will now be known as Sir David, said in a statement to the PA news agency, “Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.”

“To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.”

“Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.”

“I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.”

“It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”

Beckham came through the ranks at United and was part of the famous class of 92 that went on to conquer football and win everything.

He made his debut for the Red Devils in 1995 and went on to chalk up 394 appearances. He scored 85 goals for the club before leaving for Real Madrid in 2003.

At Old Trafford, Beckham won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League.

The former England captain and current co-owner of MLS side Inter Miami becomes the 14th footballer to receive a knighthood, excluding administrators.

The Athletic notes that with Beckham now receiving his knighthood, United can lay claim to having produced four footballing knights – more than any other club

The other three are Sir Matt Busby, Sir Bobby Charlton and of course, Sir Alex Ferguson.
