“It totally changed”: United star names missing ingredient that doomed club to devastating 5-2 CL loss to Wolfsburg

Manchester United star Fridolina Rolfö has pinpointed the fatal flaw that doomed the club to a humiliating 5-2 loss at the hands of Wolfsburg. United torn apart Heading into the meeting with Wolfsburg, United boasted a 100% record in the Champions League. Wolfsburg were always going to be a tough opponent for United but there was confidence the team could muster a result. However, the opposite was the case. United took the lead courtesy of Rolfö after some fine work from Melvine Malard. But they weren’t ahead for too long as Wolfsburg restored parity just three minutes later through Ella Peddemors, who ruthlessly punished a Safia Middleton-Patel mistake. Pedemmors grabbed her second of the match after the half-hour mark, beating Middleton-Patel from 35 yards. Lineth Beerensteyn gave the hosts a two-goal cushion when she latched onto a poor Julia Zigiotti Olme pass to fire the ball into the back of the net. Malard got on the score sheet to give United some hope of mounting a comeback but this optimism was dashed as Beerensteyn added another before Vivien Endemann made it 5-2 in added time. This latest defeat means that United have now lost three of their last four games across the Champions League and WSL. After the final whistle, Rolfö spoke to club media and pointed to the lack of togetherness as a reason behind the disastrous defeat. Rolfö’s verdict The summer signing said [as quoted by SheKicks], “It was a very disappointing loss today. It’s a hard one to take.” Asked exactly what went wrong, Rolfö answered, “It’s hard to say now after the game, because I felt like we had a good start in the game, but it totally changed. We were not compact enough, our defence was not good enough.” “It felt like we were not having this togetherness that I usually feel when we play together, so that was something missing. We have to learn from this and look through what we did wrong, and hopefully win the next couple of games we have after the international team break.” The Sweden international added, “It’s a process, we’re working towards a goal, we want to win all games we’re playing.” “But we also have to see today that Wolfsburg, they are a good team, they performed well, but I know we can play much better than this, so [we must] learn from our mistakes and get better.” The 31-year-old vowed that she and her teammates will do better as they seek to guarantee automatic progression to the knockout stages.
