“It fired me up”: United star gives surprise reaction to Ruben Amorim’s bold comments

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has backed head coach Ruben Amorim’s controversial remarks about the team, admitting they motivated him.

The comments came after United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, which left the club languishing in an uncharacteristic 13th place in the Premier League.

Amorim’s post-match outburst branded this United squad as “maybe the worst in history,” a statement that reportedly came during a heated critique that saw the manager damage a dressing-room screen.

Despite the abrasiveness of his comments, Fernandes defended his coach, suggesting they came from a place of frustration and passion.

Speaking about the incident, Fernandes said, “I don’t want to see my manager saying certain things about the team because I know he doesn’t feel that. In a moment of rage — and I am Portuguese, so I understand this well — sometimes the blood rises too quickly.”

The Portuguese midfielder likened Amorim’s intense criticism to previous experiences under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who, while known for his calm demeanour, occasionally let his frustration show when the team underperformed.

“When a manager makes himself part of what he’s saying, no one can get angry or disappointed. It shows accountability,” Fernandes added.

Despite Amorim’s hard-hitting remarks, Fernandes revealed they have catalysed improvement.

“It fired me up. Criticism like that makes you want to prove yourself,” he admitted.

Fernandes emphasised the importance of using each game as an opportunity to restore the club to its former glory.

As United prepare for a crucial test against Fulham, Amorim’s fiery style and Fernandes’ rallying cry underline the urgency of turning the tide in a season that has yet to meet the lofty expectations of players and fans alike.

Whether these criticisms will spark a revival remains to be seen, but the captain’s words hint at a team eager to reclaim its identity.
