INEOS caught napping as City swoop for long term United target available for just €25m – report

Manchester City are interested in signing Manchester United target Denzel Dumfries.

The Red Devils have held a long-term interest in the Dutch fullback since the days of Erik ten Hag’s stint as manager of the club.

Dumfries impressed again this season, especially in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona where he grabbed two goals and three assists over two legs.

The player’s release clause has dropped to €25 million until the middle of July and he has even changed agents to try and seal a move.

FC Barcelona are reportedly interested in doing a deal for the Netherlands international but United could also have competition from much closer to home.

Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo report that Man City are currently ahead of Barcelona in the pursuit of the marauding fullback.

They report that “the club currently rumoured to be interested in signing him is Manchester City.”

Transfer journalist Steve Kay has claimed that City “are already on the trail of Dumfries” and have begun talks for the player.

It is claimed that City are in the market to finally replace Kyle Walker who was “instrumental” to their success in the past.

Nonetheless, Mundo Deportivo argue that Barcelona will struggle to get involved in the deal due to financial fair play problems.

They state that the club had to a prioritise move for former Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia over Dumfries so as a result, they have been unable to get fully involved in the race for him.

Therefore, should United hold any serious interest in the explosive wingback, they will likely need to overcome the challenge of their fierce city rivals.
