Bayern Munich star and Manchester United target Mathys Tel is reportedly on his way to complete a late loan move to Tottenham Hotspur.
United have been heavily linked with a swoop for Tel amidst the club’s need to reinforce their attacking options.
David Ornstein revealed that United were eager to sign Tel but only an initial loan deal, due to their dire financial shape, brought about by the pressures of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
The Red Devils were not the only party pursuing Tel. Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Spurs were also mentioned as interested parties in his signature.
Spurs even agreed a €60m fee with Bayern over a permanent transfer but Tel rejected them. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy jetted to Germany to try and persuade the player to change his mind but his efforts proved futile, as Tel stuck to his guns.
It has been consistently reported over the last few days that Old Trafford was Tel’s preferred destination. Indeed, the player was waiting for the Red Devils to bid for him before he made a decision on his future.
This stance was reiterated again on Sunday, shortly before it emerged that talks between United and Bayern had completely collapsed.
It’s understood that the two European giants could not find a compromise over the terms of a deal.
Now, with hours left until the close of the window, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Tel has made a remarkable U-turn and has accepted to join Ange Postecoglou’s ranks in North London.
Plettenberg wrote on X, “Mathys Tel on his way to TOTTENHAM !!!”

Plettenberg added in a subsequent post, “Incredible twist. Mathys Tel will undergo his medical with Tottenham today. It is expected to be a loan without an option to buy.”

This has also been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

It seems almost certain that United will miss out on Tel, and unless INEOS has an alternative plan in place, the transfer window will close without any new forwards to strengthen the attack.
As it stands, Amorim’s forward options are Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo – uninspiring to say the least.
