Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup at the earliest stage they could have last night.Indeed, the Red Devils entered the competition in the third round and formed one of only a few all-Premier League ties when being drawn to notorious bogey opponents Brighton and Hove Albion.United slump to 2-1 FA Cup defeat on home soil(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)The Seagulls were once again able to reign victorious on United’s turf by securing a 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford. In the league, prior to United’s 4-2 win in October, Brighton had secured three wins in three successive seasons at the stadium. On Sunday evening, goals from Brajan Gruda and former Red Danny Welbeck were enough for Brighton to rubber-stamp their spot in the FA Cup fourth round, while simultaneously confirming that United would play their fewest games in a season since 1915.They were knocked out of the League Cup in their first outing via a penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town in August, and failed to qualify for any European competition last term, meaning the fixture list has been considerably lighter in M16.Shea Lacey lauded despite United loss (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Even amidst the dismal result, Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston singled out one player for praise: Shea Lacey. The highly-rated teenage starlet, 18, entered the fray in the 62nd minute to try and turn United’s fortunes around, with Railston saying of Lacey’s performance on X/Twitter: “Lacey is fearless and makes stuff happen. Comes close to scoring again by cutting in from the right.” You can often tell how good a young player is by how often teammates give them the ball. Manchester United are giving the ball to Shea Lacey at every opportunity. That says a lot. — SCOUTED (@scoutedftbl) January 11, 2026Unfortunately for the academy attacker, he was sent for an early bath after being brandished a second yellow card by Simon Hooper in the 89th minute for dissent. It brought what had been a lively cameo to a sour end for Lacey, so he’ll be hoping he can still be granted ample chances from now until the summer to prove he’s ready for first-team action. It was heartwarming to see the applause for Shea Lacey as he left the pitch visibly upset. He was applauded by fans who appreciate proper #mufc wingers. He’ll come back stronger from the setback, and has shown enough to be involved with the first-team for the rest of the season — Steven Railston (@StevenRailston) January 11, 2026
