“I will be very clear”: Skinner sets out his stall ahead of emotionally charged fixture versus Liverpool

Marc Skinner gave his two cents on Manchester United Women’s crucial upcoming fixture versus fierce rivals Liverpool this Sunday.

United have made a positive start to the season, gaining seven points from nine in the league.

They have also secured their passage into the league phase of the Champions League for the first time ever.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Skinner went over numerous topics ahead of the big match.

Arsenal draw

Commenting on United’s 0-0 stalemate with European champions Arsenal last week Skinner stated, “I thought we were excellent. Look I said to the players, we want to be winning those games” but that he understood how tired his team were after so many games in the last two weeks.

He went on, “to perform the way we did and I think we created the best chance, a draw was probably the right result but it wasn’t just us dropping back, we were actually quite progressive with the ball. To limit this Arsenal team, who have been, like us, blowing teams away, to limit their shot count to below double figures is the sign of the quality of our players.”

Skinner also praised Phallon Tullis-Joyce’s performances claiming United have a keeper who can make saves that “few others can.”

He also claimed that United have “the best keeper” and it is almost a shame how she makes the incredible appear routine.

Matt Beard tribute

Reflecting on the death of former Liverpool Women’s manager Matt Beard, Skinner claimed, “when you get a moment to reflect on memories of the man, I don’t think many have any bad memories. Just a great sign of a great person.”

On Liverpool

Commenting on how his United side will approach the game at Liverpool he said, “look, I will be very clear on how we want to tackle it. I think the best memory and credit you can pay to someone who was such a great competitor is to be great competition. I think there will be emotions from Liverpool but for us its a great competitor, a team that are rivals.”

He added, “we need to make sure that we perform and the best way to celebrate his life, is to do it the way he would have done it and that is to give absolutely everything. So we will go into this game and we will try and be aware of the emotions but play the game.”

“For now, it’s a game of football that we need to try and go and win. That is the trajectory that we want to be on.”

United will kick off at the Totally Wicked Stadium this Sunday at noon BST.

Alex Browne

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
