“I was afraid”: Amorim signing reveals he was sceptical about joining United this year

Diego Leon rose through the ranks at Cerro Porteno before catching the eye of Manchester United.

The Red Devils reached an agreement with the Paraguayan club worth £6.5m for the young left-back in January, and the player arrived at the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

United also signed Patrick Dorgu in January, and the Danish left-back remains the first choice under Amorim at the moment.

Leon, as such, has struggled for opportunities this season and is yet to make his senior debut.

Amorim taking it slow with Leon

Leon was an unused substitute in the games against Grimsby Town, Manchester City, Brentford and Sunderland in this campaign.

The Paraguayan, however, has featured for United’s Under-21 side this season, logging 108 minutes of action so far.

Having arrived in Europe for the first time in his career, Ruben Amorim is understandably allowing the 18 year old time to acclimatise to the rigours of the league.

Leon has now opened up about his move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Was initially afraid to join United

Leon recently sat down with Paraguay’s 1080 AM, as reported by Versus, where he discussed his career at length.

The youngster revealed that he was nervous about joining United, stating: “When they told me about coming to England, I was afraid. The language and other things, but luckily, I’ve adapted now.”

Despite his slow start at the Theatre of Dreams, Leon has already made his senior debut for Paraguay. The teenager was called up to the national team during this month’s international break and earned his debut against South Korea in Seoul.

Recalling the experience, Leon said: “I was so happy to be called up to the national team. It’s hard to grasp everything that’s happened to me in these two years.”

The teenager went on to reflect on how his life has changed over the past year, insisting that he had only wanted to play for Cerro’s reserve team.

“I only wanted to play for the Cerro’s reserves, but God had better plans for me,” said Leon.

Unfortunately, with Dorgu ahead of him in the pecking order, and Diogo Dalot also available to cover in the left wing-back position, the Paraguayan is likely to struggle for senior minutes this season. A recent report from The Peoples Person suggested that Leon could leave on loan in January.
