“He’s on the list, but…”: Journalist sheds light on Bundesliga maestro’s possible move to United in January

Manchester United have won three of their last four Premier League games and are slowly coming to terms with Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.

The Red Devils revamped their attack over the summer, and are already reaping the rewards this season. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have impressed so far, while Benjamin Sesko is also growing in stature with every game.

The Premier League giants also wanted to upgrade their midfield this summer, but their efforts failed to bear fruit.

Bruno Fernandes has since been deployed in a two-man midfield alongside Casemiro, but Ruben Amorim is expected to address the position in 2026. Recent reports have named Angelo Stiller as a potential option for the job.

The heir to Toni Kroos

Stiller’s recent performances for VfB Stuttgart have already seen him compared to Real Madrid and Germany legend Toni Kroos.

With the midfield now a glaring weakness in the side, United could be tempted to push for the German’s signature at the turn of the year.

However, it now appears that a January move for the 24 year old may be off the cards.

United have four alternatives to Stiller

Speaking to TEAMtalk, journalist Dean Jones explained why Stiller is not an option for the Red Devils in the winter transfer window.

“There’s a lot of talk about Angelo Stiller at the moment and it’s right that he’s on the list – but there is a lot to fall into place before a decision would be made, and it’s not an option for January,” said Jones.

“There are a couple of important things to note about the Stiller interest. One thing we have reported before is that he is more seen as a Bruno Fernandes or Kobbie Mainoo type figure, so would most likely be replacing one of those two.

“Secondly, signing someone from abroad in January is not really what they want to do in this window because of the time it can take to settle and fit in.”

Jones went on to name four alternatives to Stiller who may be realistic targets for United in January, adding: “I think that’s why you are hearing more about Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, Yehor Yarmoliuk and Adam Wharton.”

“Yes, they are all going to be difficult to sign mid-season, but if it can be done, there is a better chance of them settling into action because they are already in the rhythm of Premier League football.”

If United manage to reinforce their midfield in the middle of the campaign, they could improve their chances of finishing among the top four in the league this season. Ruben Amorim’s side are now ninth in the league table after eight games, but are just three points adrift of second-placed Manchester City.
