Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has confirmed that he is in talks with the club regarding a contract extension. The English defender’s current deal expires in a couple of months, adding to speculation over his future. Maguire may be in the twilight of his career, but he remains a key figure for the Red Devils, starting every game under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. The 34 year old has registered two goals and one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions this season, 15 of which have been starts. The Englishman has enjoyed a tremendous turnaround at Old Trafford, from being ridiculed by pundits and fans to becoming indispensable for United. The Red Devils, meanwhile, signed Matthijs de Ligt in 2024 as a possible replacement for Maguire. However, with the Dutchman as well as Lisandro Martinez struggling with injuries this season, the Englishman’s contract situation is fast emerging as a priority for the Premier League giants. Recent reports have suggested that the veteran defender is in advanced negotiations to extend his stay at the Theatre of Dreams. The Englishman has now provided an update on his contract situation. Confident of agreeing extension Speaking recently, as cited by The Independent, Maguire remained confident of reaching an agreement for a new deal. He said: “I think there’s been talks. I think we’ll reach an agreement where it’s best for the club and myself.” “What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks. But, yeah, I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave. But I think it will – it should – get sorted pretty soon.” Maguire went on to acknowledge his love for the Red Devils, adding: “Yeah, I love this club. But it’s got to be right for myself, it’s got to be right for the club as well.” “I don’t want to be staying on a sentimental value. I want to be staying because I want to be there and the club want me to drive the club forward still, and they feel like I’ve got a big part to play in it. And if that’s the case, then I’m sure we’ll sit down and reach something.” Praise for Kobbie Mainoo Maguire picked up a red card in United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last week, and will have to sit out the upcoming Premier League clash against Leeds United. However, the Englishman has returned to the Three Lions squad ahead of the international break, alongside Kobbie Mainoo. The 20 year old was almost pushed out the door by former head coach Ruben Amorim but has enjoyed a resurgence under Carrick. Maguire went on to heap praise on his countryman, acknowledging that the youngster has gone through a lot in his career already. “I’m sure there are areas that he wants to improve and he still can improve, because he’s so young, really, for what he’s been through.” “He’s been through a lot in his short career where he’s probably thinking, ‘I need to get out and go and play some games’. To be back in with a chance of being at a World Cup is a great turnaround for him.” Final Thoughts Maguire is now one of the longest-serving players at United, and has made 266 appearances for the club. The Englishman’s knowledge and understanding of the club’s ethos also make him a key presence in the dressing room, so the Red Devils must be commended for taking proactive steps to extend his stay.
