Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has been left perplexed by the club’s transfer dealings over the last two years.
Scott McTominay
United, like most clubs in England, have had to adapt to the new world of Financial Fair Play rules.
The club have undergone some serious cuts and have also sold homegrown players such as McTominay and Alejandro Garnacho.
They will also hope FC Barcelona take up their option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently in the summer.
McTominay was sold to Napoli in the summer of 2024 and shocked the world by becoming the Italians’ key player as they won the Serie A title.
As a result, he was nominated for the Ballon d’Or and finished a highly credible 18th.
Schmeichel blasts decision to sell
Speaking on the Sacked in the Morning podcast, the former keeper commented, “this is a Scottish podcast, the best example is Scott McTominay. He is so much Manchester United.”
Commenting further on the issue he added, “a manager comes in. United are probably two years and a bit to prove himself. And then you look at him, he’s not that kind of player who’s going to score or create that goal.”
Schmeichel also believes the academy product is not at Old Trafford due to a lack of faith in the midfielder by the club.
He elaborated, “they don’t trust him to be the one they’re building the team around. They want the good, neat players, and he’s just been the victim of that time and time again. I just don’t get what he’s doing at Napoli.”
Schmeichel also commented on his compatriot Rasmus Hojlund, who is currently on loan at Napoli, and believes he also represents what the club is.
He added, “they are Manchester United players. You will get no one with more enthusiasm for Manchester United than Rasmus Hojlund. He was writing about being a Manchester United player when he was 10 years old.”
