Manchester United had hoped to utilise the late Turkish transfer window deadline to their advantage by offloading out-of-favour players.
For example, the Old Trafford faithful will now be well aware that Andre Onana is spending the season on loan with Trabzonspor after agreeing the move last Saturday.
When Senne Lammens’ transfer to United was progressing rapidly, Onana was informed that he could pursue another venture, given he would fall even further in the goalkeeping pecking order upon the arrival of the 23-year-old.
His options were limited at that stage of the summer, hence approving a temporary switch to the Super Lig.
Tyrell Malacia turned down Super Lig offer
Tyrell Malacia, the only remaining member from Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’, was then approached by Eyupspor to negotiate a loan after his move to Spanish outfit Elche fell through on the final day of the main European deadline.
The defender was, however, uninterested in following Onana to Turkey, and closed off the prospect entirely. Malacia has since been officially registered in United’s 2025/2026 Premier League squad list, although it remains to be seen how much he’ll actually feature throughout the course of the term.
Academy forward Sam Mather was on cusp of permanent move
Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston revealed this morning that another United player had seen his potential departure fall through at the 11th hour.
Youngster Sam Mather was in talks with Kayserispor on Friday to join the club permanently from United.
The deal ‘collapsed’ late last night, meaning the 21-year-old is poised to continue playing academy football until he can leave in January.
Railston adds that Mather had been ‘hungry all window to leave for the next step of his career’; he is yet to make his maiden bow for the first team, despite being part of the youth ranks since he was six.
