“His passing is nuts!”: United using gifted wonderkid with “Paul Pogba-esque swagger” to lure England’s finest talents

Manchester United are reportedly leveraging the success of Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi to reel in the country’s brightest young stars to Old Trafford.

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS assumed operational control of United in February last year, the club’s transfer policy has radically shifted from signing already-established superstars to recruiting youngsters who can be nurtured to potentially become world-class.

Last summer, United signed the likes of Obi (17) and Sekou Kone (18). While Obi has already made his first-team debut and racked up a few more appearances, Kone has yet to break into Ruben Amorim’s plans but it feels like only a matter of time until he does.

Meanwhile, Heaven joined United during the January transfer window and wasted no time in making himself a key member in the senior set-up.

The teenager has caught the eye with his no-nonsense defending and incredible ability on the ball. He even scored his first goal for United in last week’s 3-0 comeback victory over Hong Kong. Obi scored the other two goals, which were also his first for the club.

In the recently concluded 2024/25 season, Obi and Heaven –  both signed from Arsenal –  made 14 appearances between them. Amorim has spoken glowingly of both players and according to the Daily Mail, the duo are being showcased as the poster boys for United’s renewed push to attract top-tier talent.

The Mail state, “United’s hierarchy are using Heaven and Chido as the sales pitch to other top academy players.”

The newspaper did a profile featuring interviews with several of his former youth coaches, who offered valuable insight into his background, playing style, and potential for future development.

Heaven once lined up for Sunday League side Levels FC in Barking, east London, where he worked with Terry Bobie, who also worked as a Chelsea scout.

Bobie told the Daily Mail, “He played a friendly for us and he was training with me on a regular basis one-to-one every week. I sent him into Chelsea for a trial but he was unsuccessful there and then I passed him onto my friend at Arsenal. Prior to that he had gone into Fulham and Tottenham. People had different opinions on him.”

“He was a central midfielder, left-footed, very gangly, but good on the ball. He has that Paul Pogba-esque swagger. He doesn’t really rush things which you can see to this day. He is so relaxed and he just does things at his pace.”

“When I was coaching him I’d say ‘Ayden, come on man, game pace’ but you have to take a step back and look at it from the perspective of he could see things the average kid doesn’t see. He executes things really well and that stood out for me. He’s always been technically very, very good on the ball.”

Former Arsenal academy coach Alex Nichols explained, “When you have a player as young as he is and playing at such a level, you cannot put limitations on where he can end up. He asks very probing questions when he is given new tasks, is very engaging and quiet but he has a calm self-assuredness about him.”

Bobie described Heaven as mostly quiet but occasionally ‘cheeky’ –  a charming combination that allows him to connect well with those around him.

Bobie said that he thinks United may have the ball-playing midfielder they desperately need in Heaven.

“He can do so much. I think there is more to come from his locker and I know he can play midfield for Manchester United, 100 per cent, if given the opportunity.”

“It’s early days but once he grows into it and gets confident I know he can play in midfield. From when I used to work with him the range of his passing is nuts, it’s crazy. He’s got a good eye for goal, too. There is more to come if he is made to feel comfortable enough to express himself in that way.”

The sky is the limit for Heaven, and hopefully, his progress at United inspires others in his age group to follow a similar path.
