“Here we go”: Fabrizio Romano confirms United set for huge payday as £55m deal is struck for academy graduate to join rival PL club

Manchester United are in line for a major financial windfall after Newcastle struck an agreement to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest.

Elanga came through the ranks at United before his departure in the summer of 2023.

His sale was sanctioned by Erik ten Hag, who is believed to have thought the forward did not have the quality needed to regularly line up for the club.

Elanga turned out 55 times for the Red Devils, who received £15m in a move that was registered as pure profit from a PSR standpoint, given his status as an academy graduate.

He has gone on to see his value soar, delivering much-improved performances at Forest.

The Sweden international played in all 38 of Forest’s Premier League games last season, notching an impressive six goals and 11 assists as he helped the side to a seventh-placed Premier League finish that qualified them for the Conference League.

Newcastle’s opening bid for Elanga rejected by Forest

Long-term admirers of Elanga, Newcastle, had an opening bid worth £45m rejected by Forest last month.

It was stated that Forest had no intention of selling Elanga, who is considered one of the key players under Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Magpies also tried to sign Elanga last summer but their advances were rebuffed by Forest. However, they did not give up and now, it looks like Eddie Howe is set to get his man.

Elanga set for a switch to St James’ Park

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have reached an agreement worth around £55m for Elanga to seal a switch to the Tyneside outfit.

Romano wrote on X, “EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Elanga to Newcastle, here we go! Deal in place club to club with Nottingham Forest for £55m.”

“Agreement also in place with player’s camp on long term deal.”

This has been confirmed by the reliable David Ornstein, who explains, “Newcastle United have agreed a deal with Nottingham Forest for the signing of Anthony Elanga.”

“A deal consisting of an initial fee of £52million plus bonuses that are considered difficult to reach has been agreed and personal terms are in place on a five-year contract. Elanga is set to undergo a medical in the next 48 hours and he is likely to to link up with his new team-mates by the end of the week.”

United set to benefit financially from the transfer

When United sold Elanga to Forest, the 20-time English champions included a sizeable sell-on clause, which will now prove valuable and secure them a substantial payout.

As per the Manchester Evening News, United have a 15% sell-on percentage for Elanga.

This entitles the Red Devils to £6m of Forest’s £40m profit. That would bring the total transfer fee United have pocketed for Elanga up to £21m, not including any further add-ons.

This surprise cash injection will almost certainly be added to Amorim’s summer transfer budget and would help secure the signings of targets like Bryan Mbeumo and others.
