Manchester United have suffered in recent seasons due to the lack of a competent shot-stopper. The downward spiral began when former manager Erik ten Hag decided to ditch club legend David de Gea in favour of reuniting with Andre Onana. The Cameroonian proved to be an unmitigated disaster, with major mistakes both in Europe and in the Premier League costing the Red Devils big time. Ruben Amorim was far from pleased with the ex-Ajax ace, but with more pressing issues to deal with, he opted to hand the 29-year-old one last chance at salvaging his Old Trafford career. Senne Lammens has been a breath of fresh air But a disastrous showing in the Carabao Cup against League Two side Grimsby Town meant there was no way back for him, and he was shipped to Trabzonspor on loan. In came Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day in his place. There was plenty of skepticism regarding the Belgian’s signing, given United were also linked with World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez. However, the 23-year-old has impressed one and all with his shot-stopping and his command over his area. And on Boxing Day, he picked up his second clean sheet of the season. Most importantly, he has made zero errors leading to a goal, and has not unnecessarily complicated matters when trying to play out from the back. That calmness has transferred to the backline as well, with defenders looking more at ease, both when passing the ball back to him, and during set-pieces. Dorgu hails Senne Lammens Patrick Dorgu, the matchwinner from the Newcastle game, was full of praise for the new United goalie, claiming his effective communication has been a huge asset for defenders. In an interview with MUTV, the Dane explained, “I think he helped with his calmness. “He’s very calm and he’s talking a lot to the defenders and helping everyone on the pitch with his communication. “He’s just calm and he tries to take responsibility to help us defenders as well. He came in well and he’s doing really well, so he just needs to keep going.” Hopefully, the Belgium international can keep this form up, especially amid the mounting injury crisis at the club, and the ever-changing backline.
