Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has reportedly reached a major verdict on his club future.
Maguire secures victory over Liverpool
Maguire was the hero of the day as United snatched a 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday. The victory marked United’s first at Anfield since 2016.
Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock inside two minutes, latching onto a pass from Amad before producing a calm and composed finish.
Cody Gakpo drew Liverpool level in the 78th minute, giving Arne Slot’s side hope of mounting a comeback and handing United another disappointing result. However, Maguire silenced the Anfield crowd shortly after as he rose highest to head home a brilliant delivery from Bruno Fernandes.
Courtesy of the win, United have moved up to ninth place in the table and just two points adrift of the Champions League spots.
Maguire’s future has been the subject of speculation over the past few weeks, with the player currently in the final months of his contract.
As it stands, the England international is poised to leave United as a free agent in the summer of 2026. He will be free to start speaking to suitors from January.
United are understood to be keen on offering Maguire fresh terms, although it’s believed the club want him to take a pay cut.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that talks between United and Maguire’s camp over a new deal are already underway.
Now, Simon Stone of the BBC has given a huge update on the situation, indicating that Maguire is ready to slash his salary to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
Maguire makes decision on United future
BBC reveal [via TEAMtalk], Maguire “would be willing to take a pay cut in order to make [agreeing a new contract] happen.”
While the extent of the pay cut Maguire is open to is uncertain, his readiness to take one is a positive indication that talks could progress more quickly.
The 32-year-old currently earns around £190,000-a-week. Given that he is nearing the twilight of his career, it’s understandable that United want to retain him on reduced wages, even though he remains an important part of Amorim’s plans.
Maguire and United are back in action on Sunday when they face Brighton and Hove Albion at home.
