Man United manager Ruben Amorim has hinted that the Red Devils won’t sign a new goalkeeper this summer amid links with Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Amorim will be delighted with his side’s transfer business so far, with the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo joining the club on permanent deals.
However, there remains a big question mark over the goalkeeper position, with Andre Onana’s form not exactly looking the best last season. The Cameroon international was mistake-prone, and that could have cost United much more than it did in certain big games.
With that in mind, reports have said that United want to bring in a new keeper this summer, with one of the main links being Paris Saint-Germain stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could leave the French capital this summer as PSG recently signed Lille FC goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Donnarumma remains one of the best stoppers in the world, and would certainly be a huge upgrade on Onana, however, it it not clear yet as to whether the Red Devils are going to make a move for him before the end of the window.
Amorim hints that United won’t go after Donnarumma
Amid the uncertainty surrounding Onana’s future, United manager Amorim has backed his current keeper, and his backups (Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir), as he praised them in a recent interview, hinting that he may not decide to bring in a new goalkeeper such as Donnarumma.
Amorim told the Manchester Evening News: “I think even when you talk about Andre [Onana], you can see the goalkeepers… even Tom [Heaton] is leaner, he’s a different goalkeeper; Altay [Bayindir] did really well, and Onana is going to be better, like the other guys, this year.”
It seems as though the United boss has faith in his current goalkeepers, and if that is the case, then United fans may have to limit their excitement at the potential addition of Donnarumma, until at least the January transfer window.
