Bruno Fernandes’ long-term United future is in doubt.
Last summer, Fernandes was linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Hilal reportedly willing to break the bank to sign him.
In the end, nothing came of those rumours, and Fernandes reaffirmed his commitment to United.
While he stayed and continues to play a key role in Amorim’s midfield, interestingly, fresh links have emerged suggesting a potential 2026 exit.
Exit links persist
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr are said to be keen, but reports claim Fernandes has no desire to move to the Middle East.
As the Saudi Pro League interest fades, links to Bayern Munich have quickly surfaced.
The Peoples Person relayed a report not long ago suggesting the Bundesliga heavyweights were ready to pounce on the United skipper next summer.
And while United fans braced themselves for Bayern’s approach, it has since emerged that Fernandes could welcome such a move.
Over the weekend, a report from Spain suggested Fernandes might consider leaving at the end of the season if United’s form and performances fail to improve.
That same report also touched on the Bayern links.
But just as speculation around a Munich move continues to swirl, a bombshell has dropped.
Truth of Bayern links
Christian Falk lifts the lid on Bayern’s pursuit of Fernandes.
“The German champions are not particularly interested in signing Fernandes in the next window, as they have other priorities,” Falk said on CF Bayern Insider.
He also revealed that Bayern’s belief in Jamal Musiala as their number #10 means there’s no real need to pursue the United number #8.
Fernandes’ salary could also be a sticking point.
“Bayern, moreover, have taken cost-cutting measures and they want to reduce the wage bill of the team,” Falk added.
“In such a scenario, they cannot afford to meet around €20 million per year minimum for Fernandes.”
News of Bayern not being interested is likely to go down well at Old Trafford.
Still influential
While some feel Fernandes has not had the brightest start to the season, the numbers tell a different story.
Despite operating in a deeper role, Fernandes continues to influence United’s attacking play.
With the 22 chances he has created, he is the only Premier League player to have produced 20-plus chances this season.
His assist for Harry Maguire’s winner against Liverpool marked his 52nd in the Premier League for United placing him fifth in the club’s all-time assist charts.
Beyond his impact on the pitch, the 31-year-old’s leadership and experience remain vital to Amorim’s project.
Showing no signs of slowing down and growing into his central midfield role, Fernandes still has plenty to offer this United side and it would be baffling to see him leave next year.
