Former Manchester United interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, has been linked to a move to German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
The German was in charge at Old Trafford from November 2021 to May 2022 in a largely forgettable spell as manager. The team’s final tally of 58 points is the worst in the club’s Premier League history but that could well be broken this season.
He did make waves with his comments about the team needing “open heart surgery” however.
Rangnick was supposed to stay on in a consultancy role at Old Trafford but this never occurred as he took up the role of Austria national team manager in 2022.
He has previously been linked to a return as a club manager to Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in the past but it now seems both clubs want him to fulfil a different role.
Profil magazine and BILD newspaper (via GOAL) report that “Ralf Rangnick could make a shock return to the Bundesliga as German heavyweights Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are keenly interested in acquiring the Austria manager.”
“Bayern Munich supervisory board member Uli Hoeness is reportedly keen on appointing Rangnick as the club’s ‘mastermind’, similar to Jurgen Klopp’s role as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer, according to Bild.”
His expertise in youth development and scouting make him an attractive proposition to the Bayern board.
Rangnick is also viewed as a back-up option for a coaching or a sporting director job.
“Bayern Munich could find themselves competing with arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund for Rangnick, with Bild reporting BVB’s interest.”
It is thought that if the former United man was to join Dortmund, it would be in a sporting director role.
Rangnick has previously managed numerous clubs in Germany, most recently Schalke 04 and Red Bull Leipzig.
