Gary Neville calls United “desperate” in their pursuit of £62 million PL star

Manchester United’s sorry campaign has been largely centered around the team’s inability to perform in front of goal.

Ruben Amorim has failed to find the formula with the squad that Erik ten Hag left behind and is now desperate for additions in the upcoming summer market.

Widespread reports suggest Wolves star Matheus Cunha is highly likely to be the first signing in the window with United ready to activate the Brazilian’s £62.5 million release clause.

As reported by The Mirror, in a recent interview with Sky Sports, former United captain Gary Neville has backed the deal and expects Cunha to make an instant impact at Old Trafford should he make the move.

“They need someone who can beat players, someone who is equally as good at running through the middle with the ball as well as sometimes going outside. He’s the type of player you could see Manchester United being interested in.

“You need players who can takes risks, are good in the final third and Cunha’s got a lot of ability. If I was playing against him, I wouldn’t like a player with a bit of fight, some of the best players in the world had a spike to them. I love a player with a character,” he said.

Neville believes that United are “lopsided” with the current players in the formation Amorim deploys with Garnacho preferring to operate from wide positions leaving the other two attacking players isolated, at times.

The Sky pundit says United are in dire need of improvement in attacking areas and Cunha’s qualities are well suited to Amorim’s philosophy and formation.

“They’re desperate in that position, he would suit the system. You think of what Manchester United are playing now. They’ve let Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford go, three players who more naturally travel with the ball.

He suits this system that Ruben Amorim wants to play. They’ve lost three players who fill that position so they need to fill those roles or they’re going to struggle. They need to score goals, Manchester United,” he added.

Cunha would certainly add another string to Amorim’s attacking bow but the United head coach will be demanding further signings to hopefully complement the 25-year-old.

Despite their turbulent start to life as United’s new minority owners, INEOS seem to be keen to get this deal done as quickly as possible in order to move on to other targets that may need more work with regards to negotiating a fee.

Cunha’s release clause means Wolves will not be able to stand in a player’s way who has already made his intentions clear to move onto the next stage of his career.

Amorim will be hoping he has the majority of his targets in before pre-season gets underway and he enters his first full season in the dugout at Old Trafford.
