Four things we learnt as United sign off their Premier League season with uplifting 2-0 victory over Villa

Manchester United welcomed Aston Villa to Old Trafford for the final Premier League match of the season.

Altay Bayindir started in nets as Andre Onana was dropped from the squad amid rumours over his future.

Ayden Heaven returned to the starting lineup with Harry Maguire and a final ever United appearance for Victor Lindelof.

Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui started as the wing backs. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro were once selected as the midfield duo.

Amad and Mason Mount started the match behind Rasmus Hojlund.

Here are four things we learnt from the final match of the season.

Ayden Heaven is an exciting prospect

United fans have not had much to cheer this season but the signing of the 18 year old has been one of the best things the Red Devils have done in a long time.

He has played little but in the times he has been on the pitch, he has done nothing but impress.

Heaven was once again solid in a back three and beat Ollie Watkins for pace and strength in the rare time Villa did threaten the United defence.

The team has a lot of regeneration to go through but Heaven, alongside Yoro, will surely be two very nice building blocks to base the defence around for years to come.

The one worry is his injury proneness, as he once again went down hurt on the hour mark. Supporters will hope this is just his body getting used to the rigours of professional football but it is still a genuine concern. Luckily, he was able to continue until he was subbed off for Jonny Evans.

Wastefulness again

The Red Devils have had numerous problems all season but one of the most obvious is their inability to convert chances.

For months, United have huffed and puffed in the pursuit of goals but have rarely produced anything like free-flowing football.

In the first half, Ruben Amorim’s side missed chance after chance without hitting the back of the net.

Mason Mount and Amad both passed up wonderful chances to score in wastefulness which has summed up the majority of the Red Devils’ domestic season.

The second half followed a similar pattern as United failed to put away numerous opportunities despite playing against ten men for the entire half. Amad eventually made the difference after 76 minutes.

United fans will hope this can be addressed in the summer transfer market and they can look forward to a much more efficient season next year.

An afternoon of goodbyes

Victor Lindelof played his last game for the club from the start after eight years of service.

Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans both came off the bench for their final appearance in the red of United.

All three players will leave as free agents in the summer in what promises to be an incredibly active summer window.

The Dane almost signed off in the perfect way but his impressive free kick struck the top of the crossbar.

He would later get his big moment when he converted a late penalty in front of the Stretford End.

United must build around Amad

There has been very little light at the end of the tunnel for United fans this year but Amad has been a revelation.

He started the season barely in Erik ten Hag’s plans but he has been a key cog ever since Amorim joined.

The Ivorian scored once again as he nodded home a great ball by Fernandes to give United the lead.

Amad was fundamental in the home side’s second as he won a penalty in the 84th minute.

He has been the difference maker all season alongside Fernandes and United fans will be incredibly excited to witness his progress next year.

The one thing he must do is make sure he can stay fit for the majority of the coming season to really build on his immense potential.

Alex Browne

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
