Fletcher’s former Man Utd teammate expected to join his coaching staff in next 24 hours

Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans could make a swift return to Old Trafford, joining Darren Fletcher’s coaching staff.The Red Devils supporters received shocking news on Monday morning, as the club’s hierarchy decided to wield the axe on Ruben Amorim’s tumultuous tenure at Old Trafford.The Portuguese manager was immediately replaced by Fletcher, who will serve as a caretaker, at least for the time being.Jonny Evans tipped to join Darren Fletcher in Man Utd’s coaching staffThe 41-year-old had already served as a technical collaborator for successive Man Utd head coaches in recent years, including Amorim, before taking over the club’s U18 side last summer.While it remains to be seen whether Fletcher will be confirmed until the end of the season or replaced by a more experienced interim manager, United are working on rounding off his technical staff.Evans received a warm reception at the Theatre of Dreams in his last-ever outing. The Belfast native could be his return in the 24 hours and join the coaching staff before Wednesday night’s Premier League contest against Burnley at Turf Moor.Fletcher & Evans played together at Man Utd & West BromLike Fletcher, Evans is a Man Utd academy product who went on to become a member of the first team under Sir Alex Ferguson’s tutelage.Curiously, both men left Old Trafford in the summer of 2015 when Louis van Gaal was in charge, and they both signed for West Bromwich Albion.While the Scottish midfielder retired in 2019 following a spell at Stoke, the Northern Irish defender enjoyed a solid spell at Leicester before returning to Man Utd for a second stint in 2023, and then calling it a day at the end of last season.Following his retirement, MUFC appointed the 38-year-old as Loan Player Manager last summer, but he vacated his role last month.In the meantime, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick appear to be the leading candidates to replace Fletcher as a long-term caretaker until June, at least should INEOS decide to drop the Scot.
