Five things we learnt as short-handed United fall to unlucky 1-2 defeat to Villa

Manchester United travelled to Villa Park, aiming to return to winning ways in the Premier League. Senne Lammens started in goal, with Ayden Heaven, Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro occupying the centre-back positions. Diogo Dalot returned to a right wing-back role, while Patrick Dorgu began on the left. Casemiro’s suspension meant Manuel Ugarte was given a rare start alongside Bruno Fernandes. Benjamin Sesko returned to the starting line-up after injury, with Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount completing the attack. Here are four things we learnt from the match. Matheus Cunha takes control The Brazilian has been in fine form during December and did everything but score against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He did score his goal against Bournemouth last Monday and took on the mantle as the club’s main attacker with Bryan Mbeumo away on international duty. Cunha pressed incredibly well and worked tirelessly for the team. The number ten also carried the ball up the pitch effectively and was able to evade pressure from the Villans’ defence. He was rewarded with an equaliser in additional time at the end of the first half, finishing smartly. Ayden Heaven impresses The 19-year-old struggled for game time earlier in the season but has recently seen his minutes increase. He was tasked with the challenge of marking Ollie Watkins and did not shy away from this responsibility. Heaven saved Yoro with a wonderful last-ditch block on the England striker’s shot and also helped prevent another goal after a fine save from Lammens. He is far from the finished product, but he has certainly shown enough in his short United career to suggest he has the potential for a bright future at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes injured United fans have taken for granted the remarkable ability their captain has to stay fit. Unfortunately, they may now have to discover how well or poorly they can cope without their talisman. On 39 minutes, the Portuguese midfielder pulled up with a suspected hamstring problem but, in true Bruno fashion, continued until half-time. He was replaced by Lisandro Martinez at half-time, and United fans will now have a nervous wait to see how long they will have to manage without their captain. United’s soft centre Despite playing well, United were once again cut open whenever Villa applied any sort of pressure. It mirrored what happened against Bournemouth last week, when United could not put the Cherries away despite playing some of their best attacking football of the season. With numerous injuries in defence and midfield, it is understandable why the Red Devils are struggling, but it is a characteristic they need to shed quickly as a team. Academy debuts Ruben Amorim has been criticised for his use of the academy, and in particular, his treatment of Kobbie Mainoo. Nonetheless, Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey were both given their Premier League debuts. Lacey almost capped the perfect debut with a fine curling effort but it was well stopped by Emiliano Martinez. With the Africa Cup of Nations and injuries piling up, Amorim may need to rely on Carrington more than he anticipated over the coming weeks.
