Ahead of our 25th League Cup quarter-final, we are looking back on some stand-out fixtures from the past.
Ruben Amorim and his men will be eying up their first chance of silverware this season, as a huge game in north London stands between his squad and a two-legged semi-final.
As United face Tottenham on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup last eight, we recall five memorable League Cup quarter-finals over the years.
WAR OF THE ROSES
8/1/1992: Leeds (A) 3-1
We may have won the battle but, ultimately, not the war in the 1991/1992 season. Leeds were a formidable side who eventually won the final Division One campaign but we came out on top in a triple header. Second of which, was a 3-1 League Cup win at Elland Road, with Clayton Blackmore’s outrageous free-kick equalising an opener from his fellow Welshman, Gary Speed.
Flying wingers Andrei Kanchelskis and Ryan Giggs both beat John Lukic to send the Reds through and we also beat the Yorkshire side away in the FA Cup third round, a week later, thanks to Mark Hughes’s winner, following a 1-1 draw on enemy territory in the league at the end of the year.
BEATING THE BLUES
17/12/2002: Chelsea (H) 1-0
We made it to our first League Cup semi-final in eight years when Diego Forlan slotted home the only goal of the game. The blond-haired Uruguayan was assisted by David Beckham but it all stemmed from a mistake from Gianfranco Zola.
Gary Neville pounced and fed the ball straight to his partner on the right-hand side. This strike, combined with a solid performance from Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre at the back, was enough to take United into the next round with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.
SLAYING SPURS
1/12/2009: Tottenham (H) 2-0
We last faced Spurs in the League Cup, back in December 2009 at Old Trafford – when Darron Gibson bagged himself a brace. Two long-range efforts, something of a trademark of the Republic of Ireland midfielder, secured us a place in the semi-finals. This came the season after United faced Harry Redknapp’s side in the final of the same competition,
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men overcame Tottenham 4-1 on penalties, after a goalless 120 minutes, to lift the trophy at Wembley, with keeper Ben Foster the spot-kick hero.

STRIKERS AT THE DOUBLE
30/11/2016: West Ham (H) 4-1
An entertaining game for the fans at Old Trafford as we witnessed a fine performance from Jose Mourinho’s men, as we played West Ham in the quarter-final of our 2016/17 League Cup journey. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, our Swedish hero, was on song that evening, helping himself to two goals. So too was Anthony Martial, as he conjured up two finishes from cutbacks.
An emphatic 4-1 victory kept us on course as United won the Carabao Cup that year, beating Southampton 3-2 in the final.
Watch all the angles of Edinson Cavani’s superb finish at Everton in 2020.
GIVE IT TO EDI CAVANI
23/12/2020: Everton (A) 2-0
We put in a dominant performance at Goodison Park during the season heavily impacted by Covid-19. But it was more of a challenge of sticking the ball in the back of the net as we struggled to find a creative spark. That was until Edinson Cavani produced a moment of magic in the 88th minute as he struck a superb shot to break the deadlock.
The Toffees then chose to commit men forward in a last-ditch attempt to save their League Cup campaign, but it was to their own undoing. Marcus Rashford was able to lead a last-minute counter-attack and slide in Anthony Martial to tuck away our second goal of the night.
